Seven days of Stonewall: Newtown venue opens

Stonewall Newtown opened to a full house last night with plans to operate seven days a week.

The soft opening of Stonewall Newtown was held on Sunday night, with the evening hosted by drag queens Minnie Cooper and Ivy League.

Minnie told Gay Sydney Daily that it was a really exciting time for Stonewall and would be a fantastic addition to the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Even though we’ve come a long way with things like marriage equality, queer spaces are still incredibly important. They give people a place where they can truly be themselves,” she said.

“I think it’s wonderful that Stonewall is bringing that spirit to Newtown, and it will be fantastic for the local community as well as the wider LGBTQIA+ community.”

The opening was well received, with plenty of comments on Gay Sydney Australia’s post about the event congratulating the venue.

“Congratulations and welcome,” said Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore.

“Awesome,” said Poof Doof owner Anthony Hocking.

“My first gay bar was the Newtown Hotel back in 1985 when I was just 19, so it’s good to see another real queer space on King St,” said Adam Schembri.

While only the bottom floor was open on Sunday night, Stonewall’s Marketing Manager, Glenn Hansen, told GSD that by April all three levels would be open.

“The hours will be 7 days a week from midday and we have a 3am license. Sundays we close at midnight. It will be camp fun and fabulous,” he said.

Renovations on the top two levels are still ongoing, he said, with everyone working hard to get them open.

Already Stonewall Newtown has revealed some of its event line-up, with a hospo night planned for Mondays.

“Every Monday night, we’re rolling out the ultimate therapy session for hospitality workers and students: colourful cocktails, chilled vibes, and plenty of laughter.”

This is a change from Stonewall Hotel, which ceased trading on Mondays and Tuesdays back in 2024.

However, Hansen told GSD that repair work is underway on Oxford Street and its opening hours may change.

“Hopefully when all the development is finished Stonewall Oxford Street will also go back to 7 days a week,” he said.
