Sydney Convicts score funding boost ahead of Bingham Cup

The Sydney Convicts have received government funding to support their preparations ahead of the Bingham Cup.

The rugby union club, based in Rose Bay, was awarded $15,000 to assist with its engagements and preparations for the tournament.

The club was one of four in the Eastern Suburbs to receive new funding, alongside East Juniors RUFC, Shark Island Paddlers and Ocean Heroes.

Local Member for Vaucluse and NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane said she was pleased to secure funding for the local organisations.

“Sport brings our local community together, and we have some of the best grassroots sporting organisations in the state,” she said.

“This funding will support more people to stay active in our community.”

Sydney Convicts Rugby Club president James Moorey said the funding was a huge boost.

“This funding is a huge boost for the Sydney Convicts,” he said.

“It allows us to broaden our community engagement, break down barriers to participation, and continue using rugby as a vehicle for inclusion, connection and pride, both locally and on the international stage at the Bingham Cup.”

The 2026 Bingham Cup will be held in Brisbane (Meanjin) and will bring together hundreds of rugby players from inclusive teams around the world.

The Cup is a biennial global tournament named after Mark Bingham, a gay rugby player who was a hero of United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.

The Sydney Convicts are the world’s most successful team at the tournament, having won it five times.

Already, 45 teams, 145 individual players and 25 staff members have registered to take part in the tournament, which will be held in August.

Late registrations are still open, with the final deadline on April 26.
